WHAT IS A DELL SERVICE TAG?

A Dell Service Tag is a unique five to seven alphanumeric code found in Dell products either on the bottom, side or back of products.  The service tag number is used for Dell support to identify your computer for online service & support.  The Dell service tag is also used to generate forgotten passwords in the event  the user can't logon.

A system disabled code is a five to eight digit number error screen. Majority of laptops get an error to the effect of "system disabled" After three unsuccessful attempts to logon A five [12345] or eight [12345678] system disabled code will appear.  This code is used to generate the backdoor bios password.

When a laptop is locked with a password, a checksum of that password is stored to a FlashROM, this is a chip on the motherboard of the device which also contains the BIOS password and other settings, e.g. memory timings. With most computers this checksum is displayed after entering the wrong password three times. The checksum that is displayed can be used to generate a password.
